The laneway offers two functions, one – a studio space for the two photographer owners to work, host small shoots as well as act as an extension of their garden and home, and two – a one bedroom + study/guest bedroom apartment, to provide residential density in an otherwise single family home area.
The main floor studio is accessed by the owners through large sliding glass doors from the garden. The studio itself is simple, one wall lined with concealed storage, the other side with desk space. All furniture is easily re-configurable to transform from workspace to photography studio. Additionally, there is a compact powder room and storage room for garden furniture storage.
To abide by the City of Toronto by-law requirements, the study and bedroom needed to have sloped roof that limited the usable area. To allow for more usable space, we used custom window/skylight units in the study and bedroom to allow for lots of natural light within the apartment, while most importantly providing more standing height space in both these rooms. The custom millwork of the kitchen and bathroom allows for lots of storage while the also providing in-suite laundry.
